Caesar 1 Flashcards
erant in ea legione fortissimi viri, centuriones, qui primis ordinibus appropinquarent, Titus Pullo et Lucius Vorenus.
In that legion were (two) very brave men, centurions, to approach the first ranks, Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus.
hi perpetuas inter se controversias habebant, quinam anteferretur, omnibusque annis de locis summis simultatibus contendebant.
These men used to have continual arguments among themselves, as to who should be preferred, and in all the years they fought about positions in battle with very great quarrels
ex his Pullo, cum acerrime ad munitiones pugnaretur, “quid dubitas,” inquit, “Vorene? aut quem locum tuae pro laude virtutis spectas? hic dies de nostris controversiis iudicabit.
Of these (two), Pullo, when there was very fierce fighting near the fortifications, said, ‘Why are you hesitating Vorenus? Or for what oppurtunity are you looking which will merit praise for your valour? This day will decide about our arguments.’
haec cum dixisset, procedit extra munitiones, quaque pas hostium confertissma est visa irrumpit.
When he had said this, he advanced outside the fortifications and burst into that part of the enemy which seemed the densest.
ne Vorenus quidem sese vallo continet sed omnium veritus existimationem subsequitur.
Not even Vorenus kept himself in the rampart but followed, fearing what everyone would think about him
tum mediocri spatio relicto Pullo pilum in hostes immittit atque unum ex multitudine procurrentem traicit:
Then, having left a moderate distance (between himself and the enemy), Pullo hurled a javelin at the enemy and pierced one (of them) who was running forward out of the crowd
quo percusso et exanimato, hunc scutis protegunt, in hostem tela universit coniciunt neque dant regrediendi facultatem.
Since he (that enemy) was hit and knocked unconscious, the (Gauls) protected him with their shields, and all together threw their weapons at the enemy (Pullo), not giving him an opportunity to retreat
