T4- Cranial Nerves Flashcards
How many cranial nerves are there?
12
What is cranial nerve 1?
Olfactory nerve for smells
It is a sensory nerve
How do you test cranial nerve 1?
Close eyes and mouth
Have client occlude one nostril at a time and identify different smells
Ex: coffee, orange, toothpaste, clove oil
What is cranial nerve 2?
Optic nerve for visual acuity
It is a sensory nerve
How do you test cranial nerve II (optic)
Use a snellen chart 36cm away
Use an ophthalmoscope
Test peripheral vision with confrontation test
What is cranial nerve III
Oculomotor nerve for eye movement
It is a motor nerve
How do you test cranial nerve III (oculomotor)
Use a pen light to illuminate the pupils looking at the illuminated eye and then again looking at the opposite eye (PERRLA)
Have pt look at an object near and far
- constriction when looking close
- dilation looking far
Looking for ability to open and close eyelids
What is cranial nerve IV
Trochlear nerve for eye movement
This is a motor nerve
How do you test cranial nerve IV (trochlear)
Hold a pen light about 1 foot away and have the pt follow the light up, down, and diagonally
What is cranial nerve 5?
Trigeminal nerve for facial movement and sensation
This is both sensory and motor
How do you test cranial nerve 5 (trigeminal)
Have pt clench teeth, palpate temporal and masseter nerve
Test light touch sensation with eyes closed rubbing cotton over the forehead, sinuses, and jaw
What is cranial nerve VI
The abducens nerve for eye movement
Tests motor
How do you test the abducens nerve or (6)?
Tests lateral eye movement, following the 6 cardinal gazes with a pen light
Cranial nerve VII
Facial nerve tests facial movement and tastes on the tongue
Both motor and sensory
How to test the facial nerve (VII)
- raise eye brows
- puff cheeks
- clench teeth and palpate the muscles
- place salty or sweet tastes on anterior tongue
