Symptom Based Treatment - Nasal Congestion and Rhinorrhea Flashcards
Selective a1 adrenergic receptor AGONIST
Phenylephrine
- decongestant
- alternative to pseudoephedrine
- caution for those with HPN and heart disease
Sympathomimetic agent
Phenylpropanolamine
*decongestant and appetite suppresant
Nasal decongestant which stimulates both a and B receptors –> bronchodilation, peripheral vasoconstriction and CNS stimulation
Ephedrine
*CI - IHD, thyrotoxicosis, HPN, diabetes, prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma
Nasal decongestant which is a DIRECT acting sympathomimetic
Oxymetazoline
*must NOT be used more than 3-5 days
Nasal decongestant which is a sympathomimetic with a adrenergic activity with little or no effect on B adrenergic receptors
Tertryzoline
Direct acting sympathomimetic nasal decongestant
Xylometazoline
*must NOT be used more than 7 days
My improve nasal mucosa function through direct cleansing, removal of inflammatory mediators and improved mucociliary function
Sodium Chloride
Addresses rhinorrhea by (-) serous and seromucous gland secretions
Ipratropium bromide
*caution in patients w/ glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, myasthenia gravis
