Sympathomimetics Flashcards
Nonselective, direct acting sympathomimetic
Drug of last resort for neurogenic shock & cardiogenic shock
Vasoconstricts renal blood vessels
SE: reflex bradycardia
Norepinephrine
Drug for cardiac arrest and anaphylaxis
Non-selective, direct acting sympathomimetic
Epinephrine
Non-selective, direct acting sympathomimetic
Drug for shock, heart failure
Vasodilation in splanchnic and renal vessels via D1
Action is dose-dependent
Dopamine
Drug for asthma
Beta nonselective sympathomimetic
Competitive inhibitor of propranolol
SE: Arrhythmia, CV disturbance
Isoproterenol
Selective Alpha1 agonist
Drug for decongestion
SE: rebound nasal congestion, if given >3 days
Mydriasis without Cycloplegia with ophthalmic administration
Phenylephrine
Vs Atropine (Mydriasis with cycloplegia)
Selective Alpha 2 agonists
Methyldopa
Apraclonidine
Clonidine
MAC
Alpha2 selective
Drug for hypertension, acts centrally
SE: rebound hypertension
Clonidine
Tx for rebound hypertension from Clonidine
Phentolamine
Prevention: taper use prior to discontinuation
Alpha2 selective
Drug for pre-eclampsia
SE: hemolytic anemia (+ coombs)
Methyldopa
Alpha 2 selective
Drug for glaucoma
Decreases aqueous humor secretion
SE: BOV, dry mouth, conjunctivitis
Apraclonidine
Brimonidine
Beta1 selective
Drug for acute heart failure, cardiogenic shock
SE: Tachyphylaxis, tachycardia, arrhythmia
May be used in cardiac stress testing
Dobutamine
Beta2 selective
Drug of choice for acute asthma attacks
Also used for tocolysis of preterm labor
Can precipitate arrhythmia in pxs with COPD and heart disease
Albuterol/Salbutamol
Terbutaline, Ritodrine (for tocolysis)
Sympathomimetic of choice:
To increase CO in acute HF and septic shock
B1 and D1
Dobutamine and Dopamine
Sympathomimetic of choice:
Vasoconstriction in hemostasis/decongestion
A1 agonist
Sympathomimetic of choice:
Temporary BP maintenance in spinal shock
Hypertension
Glaucoma
A2 agonist
