Adrenoreceptor Blockers Flashcards
Irreversible Alpha nonselective blocker (forms covalent bond with alpha receptors) (A1>A2)
Drug for pheochromocytoma
SE: orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia
Phenoxybenzamine
Nonselective alpha blockers
Phenoxybenzamine
Phentolamine
Reversible alpha nonselective blocker (A1>A2)
Drug for rebound hypertension in Clonidine, pre surgical Pheochromocytoma, antidote for alpha1 agonist overdose
SE: Orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia
Phentolamine
Alpha1 selective blocker
Drug for BPH
SE: first dose orthostatic hypotension, less chance for refelx tachycardia
Prazosin
(Doxazosin, Terazosin, Tamsulosin, Silodusin)
Tamsulosin is most selective for prostatic smooth muscle
Take at night to avoid orthostatic hypotension
Advantage of alpha1 selectivity
Reflex tachycardia is less common and less severe
Drug Class of Isoproterenol
Non Selective Beta AGONIST
I SOrry, kala ko Beta Blocker ka
Non selective beta blocker
Drug for HPN, Hyperthyroidism, angina prophylaxis
SE: Bronchospasm, erectile dysfunction
Masks initial symptoms of hypoglycemia (tachycardia, tremor, anxiety) in diabetics
Propranolol
Pindolol, Timolol, Labetalol, Carvedilol, Nadolol
Drugs with combined alpha and beta blockade
May be used for hypertension in Pheochromocytoma
Carvedilol
Labetalol
Side Effect of Beta blockers on DIabetics
Can mask premonitory symptoms of hypoglycemia (i.e. Tachycardia, tremor, anxiety)
Impaired hepatic mobilization of glucose
Beta agonists that are less likely to cause bronchospasm
(with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity)
Advantage in pxs with asthma
Pindolol
Acebutolol
ISA PA!
Side effects of beta blockers when used topically in the eye
Decreases protective reflexes
Increases risk for corneal ulceration
Beta Blockers with Absent Local Anesthetic activity
Timolol
Betaxolol
Treat Bulag
Beta blocker with longest half life
Nadolol
NAsa DOLO
Beta1 selective blocker
Drugs for HPN, Heart failure, SVT
SE: less likely to cause bronchospasm, erectile dysfunction
Masks initial symptoms of hypoglycemia (tachycardia, tremor, anxiety) in diabetics
Atenolol
Betaxolol, Esmolol (SVT), Acebutolol, Metoprolol
Beta blocker with the shortest half-life
Esmolol
ESMOL = small = shortest half life
