surveillance Flashcards
whats the sequence of events for surveillance
health event, data collection, analysis, interpretation, dissemination, action, then back to data collection of that action
what are the two main types of surveillance
event based surveillance and indicator based
what is event based surveillance
Organised monitoring of reports, media stories,
rumours, and other information about health events that could be a serious risk to public health. informal and less structured
what is indicator-based surveillance
specific variable to give an indication of certain disease states in the population
what are the three types of indicator based surveillance
passive, active and sentinel
whats passive surveillance
routine recordings of indicators. this relies on self reporting from healthcare providers, usually notification from clinician or labs
what is reported in passive surveillance
a list of notifiable diseases is what is reported. if anyone is diagnosed it must be reported.
pros of passive surveillance
low cost, wide area, able to link data between different sets, e.g hospitals and labs.
also provides useful baseline data, trend monitoring and monitoring impact
cons of passive surveillance
cases must access healthcare provider inorder to be reported, this gives large potential for under reporting
what is active surveillance
public health organisations actively contacting health care providers for information. when information is actively sought out.
pros of active surveillance
may provide more complete health information, its very important in health outbreaks this
cons of active surveillance
its more resource intensive and expensive
what is sentinel surveillance
selecting certain sites or groups to provide an indication of health in population. like potentially taking a sample population of schools or certain GP practices.
