evidence based practice Flashcards
what are the three corner stones of evidence based practice
patient values and beliefs, best available evidence and clinical expertise
whats the thing about anecdotes
despite being the lowest of the evidence pyramid, anecdotes often have the greatest influence on peoples personal opinions
what can happen without good evidence
there is danger of treatments being ineffective, harms may outweigh the benefits
money may be wasted on more expensive treatments which arent necessarily better.
what does evidence based practice aim to achieve overall
ensure that the best available care is provided to patients, ensure effective treatments are used, ensure the benefits of any treatments outweigh the harms
good evidence is vital otherwise what
ineffective treatments are used, treatments can be given where harms outweigh the benefits, interventions are failed to be provided, new expensive treatments may be no better than the old ones
why may it be difficult to communicate evidence
advertisements back dubious claims, endorsemnts by prominent figures, scares and conspiracy theories, The value that people place on individual stories may lead people to ignore objective evidence
