lecture 15 Flashcards
what is Disability-adjusted life years, DALYs
it is the sum of years of life lost and years lived with disability.
what does one DALY mean
it means the loss of one year of life lived in full health
what is Years Lived with Disability
a measure of non fatal health loss. taking into account the number of people in the health state of interest and the severity of that health state
whats years of life lost
takes into account the number of deaths and the age of the death. this is a measure of fatal health loss
what demographic transition
this explains changes in population death and birth rates over time and hence the growth and change in populations over time, showing increase in life expectancy,
what is epidemiological transition
explains the change in population disease patterns over time, from communicable diseases dominating to non communicable domination,
non-communicable diseases can also be called what and where are they more common
these are called lifestyle diseases which are more popular in aging populations
define communicable and non-communicable diseases
communicable are diseases like aids and malaria which can be passed between people.
non-communicable are diseases which arent passed on
what were the two most important factors in decreasing impact of communicable diseases
sanitisation and removing wastes, So sanitising waste and removing wastes, also access to clean water enable people as they couldn’t get disease from water
over time DALY rate has decreased but DALy number increased why?
In NZ DALYs. These numbers are effected by growing pop. Total years lived in disability is increasing but the number of years lost due to said disability has decreased. So we keep people alive but do not treat them well, as they are still suffering from the disability.
DALY rate decreased. Rate is adjusted for changs in population sizes and ages. The reason for the decrease is the reduction in years of life lost due to death.
