Mechanism of Action
Binds with cholinergic receptors @ motor end plate of neuromuscular junctions
Produces a phase 1 block manifested by fasiculations
Indications
Rapid sequence intubation (RSI)
Contraindications
Acute narrow angle glaucoma, penetrating eye injuries, malignant hyperthermia, burns, extensive muscle injury. Any expected complications associated with airway management
Adverse Effects
Apnea, tachycardia, bradycardia, prolonged muscle rigidity, increased occular pressure, rhabdomyolysis, cardiac arrest
Precautions
Oxytocin, beta blockers, and organophosphates
May potentiate effects, diazepam can reduce duration of action
Dose and Administration
1-1.5mg/kg (adults and pediatrics)
Onset: 1 min, peak 1-3 mins, duration: 5-10 mins
