Drug Class
Opioid Analgesic
Mechanism of Action
Agonist for opioid receptor sites, suppresses fear and anxiety centers of brain, increases peripheral venous capacity, decreases preload and afterload, decreases cardiac O2 demand
Contraindications
head injury, exacerbation of COPD, decreased LOC, hypovolemia, pt on MAOI’s in past 14 days
Adverse Effects
Confusion, sedation, H/A, CNS depression, resp depression, apnea, syncope, bradycardia, tachycardia, N/V, dry mouth
Precautions
Potentiates sedative effects of phenothiazine’s, CNS depressants may potentiate effects, MAOI’s may cause paradoxical excitation
Dose and Administration
Adult: 2-4mg slow IVP (med. direction)
Pedi: 0.1-0.2mg/kg IV, IO,IM, SQ
Indications
Pain control, CHF, pulmonary edema, cardiac related CP
