Mechanism of Action
Depresses CNS, controls seizures by blocking ACh, @ myoneural junction
Smooth muscle relaxant in bronchospasm and uterine contractions
Stabilizes cardiac myocyte in torsades
Indications
Torsades, eclampsia, premature labor contractions, bronchoconstriction ta is refractory to beta 2 agonist tx
Contraindications
Heart blocks, myocardial damage
Adverse Effects
Drowsiness, CNS depression, respiratory depression, atrioventricular blocks, hypotension, vasodilation, hyperflexia
Precautions
May enhance effects of other CNS depressants
Changes in cardiac function seen with cardiac glycosides
Dose and Admistration
Eclamptic seizures: 1-4g over 3 mins.
Torsades: 1-2g IV (infusion rate 5-60 mins depending on stability)
Asthma: 25-50mg/kg infusion over 15-30 minutes
