Increased cardiac contractility (+ inotrope)
Enhances ventricular automaticity
Stabilizes cardiac myocyte cell membrane
Combats magnesium toxicity
Indications
Hypocalcemia, hyperkalemia, magnesium toxicity, beta blocker and calcium channel blocker OD
Contraindications
Hypercalcemia, V-fib, digitalis toxicity
Adverse Effects
Syncope, dysrhythmias, hypotension, N/V, metallic tase, necrosis @ IV injection site, coronary and cerebral artery spasm
Precautions
May worsen digitalis toxicity, antagonizes effects of calcium channel blockers do not mix with sodium bicarb in same line
Dose and Administration
Adult: 0.5-1.0g slow IVP
Pediatric: 20mg/kg up to 1g
