Subpart 3G - Birds Flashcards
What must flight-restricted birds or those that cannot fly and are allowed to roam free have access to?
Safety pens, enclosures, or other areas that offer the birds protection during overnight periods at times when their activities are not monitored.
What cannot be kept in food storage or food preparation areas?
Animal waste and dead animals and animal parts not intended for food.
What are the temperature requirements for indoor bird-housing facilities? Ventilation?
No strict temperature or auxiliary ventilation requirements. Specific to each bird species.
What do indoor pools and other aquatic areas require?
Sufficient vertical air space above the pool or other aquatic area.
What must outdoor facilities for birds have?
Shelter, with adequate ventilation in hot weather and areas of shade or other protection large enough to contain all birds at one time, including low ranking birds in dominance hierarchies.
If suspended flooring is used in bird enclosures, it must be taut enough to prevent what?
Excessive sagging under the birds weight.
If the species of bird rests by perching, there must be how many perches available in the enclosure?
An appropriate number of the correct size, shape, texture, and strength to hold all birds in the primary enclosure at the same time, including birds ranked low in the dominance hierarchy.
How must primary enclosures that are adjacent to one another/share a common side be managed?
Must be suitably screened from each other or kept at a sufficient distance to prevent injury of occupants due to predation, territorial disputes, or aggression.
In what circumstances can the normal postural and social adjustments of a bird be restricted?
- AV determines that it would be detrimental to bird’s health and well-being. Must document the reason and recommend duration for restriction
- When birds are tethered
Birds must not be tethered unless what?
- Appropriate for species of bird
- Would not cause harm to bird
- Birds are maintained on perches appropriate for species and age
- Birds have sufficient space to fully extend wings without obstruction
- Tether does not entangle birds
When can birds be kept in transport enclosures?
Birds intended for breeding, sale, in need of medical care, exhibited in traveling exhibits, or traveling for other reasons
What do wading and aquatic birds require?
Primary enclosure must contain a pool or other aquatic area and a dry area that allows easy ingress or egress of pool. Must be of sufficient surface area and depth to allow each bird to make normal postural and social adjustments.
Birds must have an environment enhancement plan. What must this plan include?
- Social grouping
- Environmental enrichment
- Special considerations
- Restraint devices
- Exemptions
What exceptions exist for the social group aspect of the environment enhancement plan?
- Aggression or debilitation
- Contagious disease
- Compatible
Individually housed species of social birds must be allowed to what, unless the AV determines it would endanger the health, safety, or well-being of the bird?
See and hear birds of their own or compatible species.
What birds require special consideration in the environmental enhancement plan?
- Nestlings, chicks, or fledglings
- Show sign of being in psychological distress through behavior or appearance
- Used in research for which the IACUC approved protocol requires restricted activity
- Individually housed social species of birds unable to see and hear birds of their own or compatible species.
What exemptions exist for the environmental enhancement plan?
- AV can exclude an individual due to its health or conditions. Unless permanent, must be reviewed at least every 30 days by AV
- IACUC may exempt for scientific reasons outlined in the protocol. Must be reviewed regularly, but at least annually
- Records of exemption must be maintained for at least 1 year
How often must birds be fed?
At least daily.
How often must water be provided to birds?
As often as necessary to ensure their health and well-being.
For enclosures containing pools or other aquatic areas, how often must the water features be cleaned?
As often as needed to maintain required water quality and minimize health hazards to birds.
How must drainage be provided for pools?
Pools with drainage systems must have the drainage system located so that all water contained in may be effectively eliminated when necessary for cleaning. Pools without drainage must be aerated and have an incoming flow of fresh water or be managed in a way that maintains water quality.
Can pools for aquatic birds be chemically treated?
Yes, but chemicals must be added in a manner that does not cause harm, discomfort, or distress to the animals.
Must pools for aquatic birds be salinized?
For those birds that require such water for their health and well-being.
How often must primary enclosures be cleaned/sanitized?
Excreta and food waste must be removed from primary enclosures and under and around as often as necessary to prevent accumulations of feces and food waste, to prevent soiling of birds, and reduce disease hazards, insects, pests, and odors.
