16
Q

What birds require special consideration in the environmental enhancement plan?

A
  1. Nestlings, chicks, or fledglings
  2. Show sign of being in psychological distress through behavior or appearance
  3. Used in research for which the IACUC approved protocol requires restricted activity
  4. Individually housed social species of birds unable to see and hear birds of their own or compatible species.
17
Q

What exemptions exist for the environmental enhancement plan?

A
  1. AV can exclude an individual due to its health or conditions. Unless permanent, must be reviewed at least every 30 days by AV
  2. IACUC may exempt for scientific reasons outlined in the protocol. Must be reviewed regularly, but at least annually
  3. Records of exemption must be maintained for at least 1 year
18
Q

How often must birds be fed?

A

At least daily.

19
Q

How often must water be provided to birds?

A

As often as necessary to ensure their health and well-being.

20
Q

For enclosures containing pools or other aquatic areas, how often must the water features be cleaned?

A

As often as needed to maintain required water quality and minimize health hazards to birds.

21
Q

How must drainage be provided for pools?

A

Pools with drainage systems must have the drainage system located so that all water contained in may be effectively eliminated when necessary for cleaning. Pools without drainage must be aerated and have an incoming flow of fresh water or be managed in a way that maintains water quality.

22
Q

Can pools for aquatic birds be chemically treated?

A

Yes, but chemicals must be added in a manner that does not cause harm, discomfort, or distress to the animals.

23
Q

Must pools for aquatic birds be salinized?

A

For those birds that require such water for their health and well-being.

24
Q

How often must primary enclosures be cleaned/sanitized?

A

Excreta and food waste must be removed from primary enclosures and under and around as often as necessary to prevent accumulations of feces and food waste, to prevent soiling of birds, and reduce disease hazards, insects, pests, and odors.

25
Q

Scheduled cleaning/sanitization may be modified during what times? When must it resume? What must be documented?

A

Breeding, egg-sitting, or feeding of chicks for birds that are easily disrupted during such behaviors. Resume cleaning/sanitization when such cleaning no longer disrupts. A schedule of cleaning/sanitization must be documented and must include when breeding season began, when the primary enclosure was last cleaned, and when cleaning/sanitization is expected to resume.

26
Q

When must the hard surfaces of primary enclosures and food and water areas and equipment be sanitized?

A

Before a new bird is brought into a housing facility or if there is evidence of infectious disease among the birds in the housing facility.

27
Q

How must primary enclosures using materials that cannot be sanitized be sanitized?

A

By removing all contaminated material as necessary or by establishing a natural composting and decomposition system that is sufficient to prevent wasted food accumulation, odors, disease, pests, insects, and vermin infestation.

28
Q

Socially dependent birds, such as clutch-mates, must be housed in social groups except:

A
  1. When AV exempts individual bird due to health or condition, or in consideration of well-being
  2. Specific management needs
  3. Research proposal approved by IACUC
29
Q

Carriers and IH must not accept a live bird for transport unless they are provided what information?

A

Name, address, and telephone number of consignee

30
Q

The certificate accompanying the birds must include what information?

A
  1. Consignor’s name, address, telephone number, and email address
  2. Number of birds
  3. Species or common names of the birds
  4. Time and date the bird was last fed and watered and the specific instructions for the nest feeding and waterings for a 24-hour period
  5. Consignor’s signature and the date and time the certificate was signed
31
Q

What must occur if delays will cause the bird shipment to arrive more than 12 hours later than originally scheduled?

A

Carrier or IH must contact consignor or consignee to notify them of the delay and to determine the necessity or methods to supply fresh foods, water, or moisture-providing foods.

32
Q

Can carriers and IH accept unweaned birds for transport?

A

Not unless transport instructions to ensure the health and well-being of the birds are specified and written by the AV and signed within 10 days of shipment.

33
Q

How must the primary enclosure for transport be modified if the bird has a fractious or stress-prone disposition?

A

Must be padded on the top and sides and have protective substrate on the bottom to prevent injury to the bird during transport.

34
Q

Projecting rims or other devices must be on the exterior of the outside walls with any ventilation openings unless:

A

The primary enclosure is permanently affixed to the conveyance or 90% or greater of the surface area of the enclosure wall is open (cage mesh)

35
Q

Can visually obscuring mesh be used to provide security for the bird in transport?

A

Yes, but must not interfere with ventilation

36
Q

Documents accompanying the shipment must be attached to the outside of an enclosure but must not obstruct what?

A

Ventilation

37
Q

How often must birds be offered water in transport? Food?

A

Every 12 hours. Every 24 hours.

38
Q

How must birds that are not able to maintain a constant body temp at ambient temperature be transported? How must instructions be provided?

A

In a brooder. Temperature of brooder must be monitored during transport and appropriate for the live bird. Written instructions for the temp requirements of birds transported in brooders or other temp-regulating units must be affixed to outside of primary enclosure.
