Subpart 2D - AV and Adequate Vet Care

Question 1

Each dealer and exhibitor must have an AV to provide adequate veterinary care. What two provisions are required?

1. Employ an AV under formal arrangements. In the case of a part-time AV, formal written plan shall include a written program of vet care and regularly scheduled visits to the premises
2. AV must have sufficient authority to ensure provision of adequate vet care and oversee the adequacy of other aspects of animal care and use

Programs of veterinary care at a dealer or exhibitor must include what?

Answer 2

1. Availability of appropriate facilities, personnel, equipment, and services to comply with Act
2. Use of appropriate methods to prevent, control, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries and availability of emergency, weekend, and holiday care
3. Daily observation of all animals to assess health and well-being. May be accomplished by someone other than AV. Mechanism of direct and frequent communication is required so that timely and accurate info on problems of animal health, behavior, and well-being is conveyed to the AV
4. Guidance to personnel regarding handling, immobilization, anesthesia, analgesia, tranquilization, and euthanasia
5. Adequate pre-procedural and post-procedural care in accordance with current established vet med and nursing procedures
