1966 - Lab Animal Welfare Act
What did the AWA 1970 amendment do?
Expanded definition of animal to any warm-blooded animal
Expanded scope of Secretary to include anesthesia and analgesia drugs
What did the AWA 1976 amendment do?
Expanded act to include dogs used for hunting, security, breeding
Included carrier and handler standards
Prohibited animal fighting ventures
What did the Food Security Act 1985 do?
Made Act applicable to research, including humane use, minimal pain and distress, alternatives, and major operative procedures
Included exercise for dogs and psychological well-being of primates
Establishment of IACUC

What did the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act (1990) do?
Required 5 day holding period of dogs/cats and written certification regarding background
What did the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act (2002) do?
Expanded the prohibitions of fighting animals to include birds
Added birds, mice, and rats to the list of animals not covered
What is a study area?
Area outside the core facility in which animals are held for more than 12 hours.
When is an animal considered weaned?
Has eaten solid food and not nursed for 5 days.
