What do other animals require regarding outdoor shelter?
Natural or artificial shelter appropriate to the local climatic conditions for the species shall be provided for all animals kept outdoors. Animals should be acclimated before exposed to the extremes of the individual climate.
How tall must perimeter fencing be? How far must it be from the primary enclosure?
8 feet for dangerous animals, 6 feet for other animals. 3 feet.
What is the function of the perimeter fence?
- Restricts animals and unauthorized persons from going through or under it and having contact with the animals
- Secondary containment system
In what situations are perimeter fences not required?
- Outdoor walls are made of sturdy, durable material and high enough and constructed in a manner that restricts entry by animals and unauthorized personnel and the Administrator gives written approval
- Effective natural barrier with Administrator approval
- Appropriate alternative security measures are employed and Administrator gives approval
- Traveling facilities where appropriate alternative security measures are employed
- Outdoor housing facility houses only domesticated farm-type animals and the facility has in place effective and customary containment and security measures.
What may indicate inadequate space?
Malnutrition, poor condition, debility, stress, or abnormal behavior patterns
How often should animals be fed? What are exceptions?
At least once daily, except as dictated by hibernation, vet treatment, normal fasts, or other professionally accepted practices
How often should animals be watered?
Provided as often as necessary for the health and comfort of the animal.
How often must excreta be removed from primary enclosures?
As often as necessary to prevent contamination of animals and minimize disease hazards and odors.
When must cages be sanitized?
Subsequent to the presence of an animal with an infectious or transmissible disease
How should other animals be separated?
Should be compatible if housed in the same primary enclosure. Must not be housed near animals that interfere with health or cause discomfort.
Where must ventilation openings be placed for primary transport enclosures of other animals?
At least 1/3 must be located on the lower half and at least 1/3 located on the upper half.
Live animals that have not reached puberty cannot be transported with adult animals other than:
Their dams
Socially dependent animals (sibling, dam, or other members of a family group) must be transported in what way?
Allowed visual and olfactory contact.
