What is Otalgia? What nerves can contribute to this?
pain located in or around the ear
- CN V (includes tiny piece of anterior ear)
- Cervical Nerves (occipital)
- Superficial Cervical Plexus (most of ear)
What’s the most common pathogen causing Acute Otitis Externa? What activities can cause this?
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
Swimming –> swimmer’s ear. It is an infection of the outer ear –> if the eardrum ruptures –> it can be A/W otitis media
Osteoma of the external ear
benign
can freeze ossicles from moving the tympanic membrane
Otosclerosis
Autosomal Dominant possibly viral ages= 10-30 tx = hearing aids + surgery find additional bony structures in the ear
Otitis Media
- one of the most common infectious diseases of kids
- most common in WINTER months which coincides w/ peak Respiratory Viral Infections

Otitis Media clinical manifestations
Upper Respiratory Infections fever otalgia hearing loss Dx = pus behind tympanic membrane
Most common BACTERIAL pathogens in Otitis Media
Streptococcal Pneumoniae
Nontypeable Haemophilus Influenzae
Moraxella Catarrahalis
