Q

what is controlled by the autonomic nervous system

A

regulation of activity of smooth muscles, blood vessels and viscera,
activity of many glands sweat glands salivary glands
regulation of heartbeat
regulation of activity of digestive tract
inputs are feedback (blood pressure and some pain)

Q

what is the autonomic nervous system composed of

A

sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions
regulates operations of internal organs
many organs recieve innervations from both division

10
Q

what is the gross organisation of the autonomic nervous system

A

2 neuron chain
this has a preganglionic neurone rising from the central nervous system
a synapse within an autonomic ganglion between pre ganglionic and post ganglionic neurones
a post ganglipnic neurone innervates the target organ

11
Q

what are autonomic ganglia

A

ganglia are swellings on peripheral nerves that contain neuronal cell bodies
in autonomic ganglia they also contain a swelling between pre ganglionic and post ganglionic neurones
the nerves containing preganglionic neuronal projections to the ganglia re myelinated and are called white rami
the nerves carrying post ganglionic neuronal projections away from ganglia are unmeylinated and are called grey rami

12
Q

what origin in the cns does the sympathetic nervous system have

A

thoracco lumbar origin
the projections from the cns are organised viscerotopically organs higher up in the body are innervated from higher in the spinal cord

13
Q

where are sympathetic pre ganglionic neurones found

A

thoracic upper lumbar levels of the spinal cord
they are located in the lateral horn
they project out from spinal cord via ventral root and connect to sympathetic ganglia via white ramus

16
Q

what is the paravertebral chain also known as

A

sympathetic chain runs alongside the vertebral column

17
Q

what is the prevertebral chain also known as

A

abdominal or collateral ganglia
found in front of the abdominal aorta

18
Q

what gland is considered a modified sympathetic ganglion

A

adrenal gland
directly innervated by sympathetic preganglionic neurones
cells in the adrenal medulla are neurone like and release adrenaline and noreadrenaline into the bloodstream

19
Q

what are sympathetic post ganglionic neurones

A

project from sympathetic ganglia to their targets
targets may be smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, or glands
these projections have etensive branching to allow multiple points of contact with their target
