Structure & Function of Blood Flashcards
what does blood do?
transports materials & heat around the body, helps fight protect against disease.
what are the components of blood?
red blood cells
white blood cells
platelets
plasma
what are red blood cells also known as?
erythrocytes
what are white blood cells also known as?
leukocytes
what are the types of white blood cells?
lymphocyte
monocyte
eosinophil
basophil
neutrophil
describe the structure of RBC.
biconcave shape - maximises s.a for O2 absorption
small & flexible - can fit through narrow blood vessels
describe the structure of WBC.
various structures - granular cytoplasm, large nucleus, lobed nucleus
describe the structure of platelets.
fragments of cells with proteins attached to surface - allows them to stick together (clot)
describe the structure of plasma.
clear, pale straw coloured liquid which makes up the fluid component of blood
whats the function of RBC?
O2 deliverers
carry back waste gases or CO2
contain haemoglobin - no nucleus so they can carry more
whats the function of WBC?
defend body against disease
consists of b lymphocytes & t lymphocytes
whats the function of platelets?
make up rest of blood, help repair your body by stopping bleeding
whats the function of plasma?
liquid part of blood that helps transport material (hormones, CO2 & waste)
what does WBC consist of?
b lymphocytes
t lymphocytes
what do T lymphocytes do?
initiate immune response
