Eukaryotic Cell Flashcards
what is an eukaryotic cell?
- have a nucleus
- have organelles
- contained in a membrane
- multicellular
what are examples of eukaryotes?
mammals, plants, fungi
what are the components of a eukaryotic cell? /14
nucleus, nucleolus, mitochondria, ribosomes, peroxisomes, lysosomes, cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, plasma membrane, rough E.R, smooth E.R, Golgi apparatus, cilia, centrioles.
whats the function of the nucleus?
cells control centre, contains genetic information, coordinates cell activity.
whats the function of the nucleolus?
stores RNA and important in production of ribosomes.
whats the function of the mitochondria?
site of respiration & produces ATP
whats the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
contains many ribosomes, & important in formation & storage of proteins.
whats the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
important in formation & storage of lipids & steroids.
whats the function of the Golgi apparatus?
works together with the ER & is important in storing & packaging molecules (lipids&proteins) in vesicles.
whats the function of the lysosomes?
contains enzymes who digest waste products
whats the function of the plasma membrane?
encloses the cell contents
whats the function of the cilia?
hair like structures, help the cell move and move fluid past cell surface
whats the function of the cytoskeleton?
maintains cells shape, contains:
- microtubules (position organelles)
- actin filaments (cytokinesis & cell movement)
- intermediates filaments (provide strength & support)
whats the function of the ribosomes?
made of 2 subunits that join together to manufacture proteins
whats the function of the centrioles?
important in spindle formation during cell division & are 2 hollow cylinders that arrange at a right angle to form a centrosome
