Regulation of Blood Glucose Levels Flashcards
what is the blood glucose levels regulated by?
homeostatic process
why is glucose needed?
for cell respiration
what does the pancreas do?
detects blood glucose concentrations & releases hormones to alter the amount of glucose in the blood.
whats happens when the glucose blood levels is too high?
pancreas detects it, increases secretion of insulin & decreases secretion of glucagon.
insulin causes muscle & liver cells to remove glucose from blood & store it as glycogen in tissue cells.
liver converts glucose to glycogen.
what happens when the glucose blood levels is too low?
pancreas detects it, decreases secretion of insulin & increases secretion of glucagon.
glucagon causes liver cells to convert glycogen to glucose & release it back into blood.
what is glucagon released by?
alpha cells in pancreas
what is insulin released by?
beta cells in pancreas.
