Stress management Flashcards
What is stress:
Negative response of the body to a threat causing anxiety.
What is eustress:
A positive response of the body to a threat.
What are the two types of effects of stress?
Cognitive- psychological
Somatic- physiological
Difference between cognitive and somatic:
Cognitive- negative thoughts and feelings, irrational thoughts
Somatic- increased HR, temp, sweating
4 way to improve somatic feelings of stress:
- Biofeedback: a device measuring physical changes which happen during stress and techniques to calm them down.
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Altering between a period of tension and relaxation.
- Centering: breathing control whilst relaxing the chest and shoulders, diverts away from stressful situation
- Breathing Control: controlling + concentrating on the rate of depth of breathing allowing performer ti relax and be less distracted.
What is thought stopping:
Using a trigger word to help remove unhelpful thoughts- redirecting to more positive thoughts
What is positive self talk?
Replacing negative thoughts about performance with positive ones, helping to focus on a tactic/ strategy.
What is Imagery?
recreating a feeling of successful movement, can involve creating a calm place.
What is visualisation?
Using a mental image of the skill to overcome pressures.
What is mental rehearsal?
Going over movements in your mind, best in a calm situation
What can visualisation, imagery and mental rehearsal be 2 types of:
Internal - feeling (kinaesthesis + emotions of movement)
External- environment, details of pitch + opponents)
What does attention control and cue utilisation state:
- higher the stress, less information processed.
What is attentional control- changing the focus of attention to detect relevant cues
Attentional Narrowing- less information absorbed as stress + arousal increase
Cue Utilisation- The ability to process information is directly linked to the level of arousal.
What does this suggest:
Under stress you focus on less cues from the environment and miss cues affecting decision making known as attentional wastage resulting in reduced performance.
Lower levels of stress mean more information is absorbed and performance successful.
Who made a model reflecting on attention in sport and focusing on relevant cues?
Niddefer
What does this model state?
You must choose the right attentional style for the right situation allowing unrequired information to be filtered and relevant to be focussed on.
