Achievement motivation Flashcards
What is achievement motivation?
Desire with which competitive situations are approached or avoided. ‘desire to succeed minus the fear of failure’.
Name Atkinson’s two personality types:
1- Approach behaviour (approaches activity with enthusiasm).
2-Avoidance behaviour- avioids competition.
What is the NACH motivation characteristics?
Approach behaviour:
-need to achieve
-attribute success internally
-confident
-task persistant
What is the NAF characteristics of motivation:
Avoidance behaviour:
-avoid failure
-take easy option
-no not like feedback/ evaluation.
Definition of interaction:
Combination of the situational and personality factors that decides the level of achievement motivation.
What does the approach behaviour rely on?
Approach behaviour depends on interaction of personality and situation
What are situation specific?
The need to achieve or avoid failure
How the interaction of personality and situation link:
Need to achieve or avoid failure is the if the probability of success is easy or hard.
Also whether they’re an introvert or extrovert- high or low incentive.
Definition of probability of success:
-In task, high chance leads to high motivation, low chance lack of motivation.
Definition of incentive value:
Reward gained from the task- high value reward- high motivation, low value rewards- lack of motivation.
Two ways to develop the need to achieve:
- Use reinforcement: offer praise + rewards as this promotes task performance.
2.Set goals- realistic and achievable so that motivation is kept (process or outcome goals).
In the achievement goal theory how is the task related goals measured:
-measured against performers own standards.
-regardless of result success is achieved and confidence is maintained.
In the achievement theory how are outcome related goals measured?
-Only is measured if goal is achieved, not interested in process to it.
-If performer succeeds then pride + satisfaction are kept
-If goal is failed confidence and motivation is lowered.
