Definition of attitude?
Ideas charged with emotion that produce specific behaviour to a specific situation.
What are attitudes?
-learned
-can be changed
-unstable
-emotional feelings
-behavioural responses
How attitude is formed:
By socialisation: process where cultural values are learnt by associating with others.
Who do we learn from when attitudes are reinforces or repeated?
Role models
How is behaviour conditioned?
By successful and reinforcement (praise will develop a positive attitude between coach and player
How can the conditioned behaviour be negative?
If the behaviour learnt is negative or if reinforcement is negative- praised for cheating.
What is the model used for attitudes?
Triadic model
State and explain the three parts of the triadic model? CAB
Cognitive: your beliefs, knowledge and thoughts. (Belief in exercise benefits)
Affective: your feelings or emotional responses. (You enjoy training)
Behavioural: your actions or intended behaviour. (You train three times a week)
Attitudes can be positive by:
-Learned from role models
-Learned from enjoyable experiences
-Learned by conditioned behaviour
-Learned from influence of significant role models

Persuasive communications
What is cognitive dissonance?
New information given to the performer to cause unease and motivate change by creating psychological discomfort/ disharmony in one part of the triadic model.
Meaning of dissonance:
To create some conflict or disharmony in the player
-settled when attitudes are aligned and discomfort/ conflict resolved.
In what ways can cognitive dissonance be used:
-give new information to promote a person to question their current behaviour and motivate change (new method of training type to challenge current thinking)
-Using rewards to promote positive behaviour
How can persuasive communication by used:
You can be talked around but it is hard if core beliefs are stable making people resilient to change.
Factors of persuasive communication?
-message need to be understood.
-quality new information
-timing of when message is given is important
-message should be given of someone of high status.
-individual must be resilient to change
