Intro to nervous system Flashcards
Internal/ external
Internal environment: blood glucose temp, internal temp, water potential, cell pH.
External: humidity, external temperature, light intensity, new/ sudden sound.
Why is coordination needed?
-Perform specific functions
-Few body systems can work in isolation
Cell signalling
- hormonal systems coordinate at a cellular level which relies on communication at a cellular level (between synapses)
Homeostasis
The maintenance of relatively constant conditions inside a body.
Nervous system
Fast, short lived and localised
Divided into:
CNS- brain and spinal cord contain relay neurones
PNS- all nerve cells
Peripheral nervous system split into:
Somatic- conscious activities
Autonomic- unconscious activities.
Autonomic further split into:
Parasympathetic- calms nervous system- release of acetylcholine
Sympathetic- F or F system releases noradrenaline.
What are neurones?
Specialised cells that conduct electrical impulses within the nervous system.
Which neuron is the CNS mainly made of?
relay neurons.
What do sensory receptors act as?
Transducers- they convert the energy of a stimulus into electrical energy.
