A negative response of the body to a threat causing anxiety
Negative stress
Anxiety and apprehension (cognitive and somatic stress)
Eustress
Positive response of the body to a threat
Causes of stress (5)
- Injury
- Playing an important match
- Playing against really important opponents
- Playing to get an important reward such as prize money
- Fear of failure caused by pressure from being watched by significant others, pressure from the coach or pressure from your own expectations
Cognitive stress
Psychological
Negative thoughts or feelings, inability to cope with the demands of the situation
Attentional Narrowing
As arousal and anxiety increase ability to take information from the environment is reduced. So some information may missed.
Somatic stress
Physiological
Increased heart rate, Muscular tension, Nausea and Sweating

Thought stopping
Performer uses a learned trigger or action to remove negative thoughts
Positive self talk
Replacing negative thoughts with positive ones through talking through positives thoughts
Imagery
Recreate successful image from past success.
Recall successful movements
Visualisation
Mental image of skill, image perfected in training and used for real thing
Mental rehearsal
Going over moves of task in mind before action takes place
Attentional control and cue utilisation
The ability to process information is directly linked to the level of arousal
