Motivation Flashcards
Motivation
A drive to succeed
Why do we need motivation
- Keep players on track
- Task persistance
- Consistency
What are the two types of motivation
Intrinsic
Extrinsic
Instrinsic motivation
Motivation from within
Intrinsic motivation sporting example
A climber will feel a sense of pride and satisfaction when they complete a difficult route
Extrinsic motivation
Motivation from an outside source (External to the performer)
What are the two ways in which external motivation is presented
- Tangible
- Intangible
Tangible motivation
Rewards that can be touched or held
Tangible motivation sporting example
Rewards such as trophies, medals or certificates etc from winning sport comps or POM
Intangible motivation
Non-physical rewards
Intangible motivation sporting example
Praise and encouragement from others
What are the problems with extrinsic rewards
- Overuse= loss in value and incentive; badge or trophy becomes the norm
- Players compete for the reward not love of game
- Pressure= cheating
- Undermine intrinsic reasons for playing= just to get reward not fun or good health
- Extrinsic reward controls behaviour- over reliant on it- Give up
How would the coach maintain correct balance of motivation
- Offer rewards and incentives like player of the week early on
- Making activity fun
- Point out health benefits
- Allow early success of skill
- Highlight role model
- Give praise
- Attribute correctly- tell performer they did well
- Setting realistic goals
- Feedback to inspire and correct errors
