Goal Setting Flashcards
Goal setting
Setting targets
What are the benefits of goal setting (3)
- Increasing motivation and making sure that the participants in the sporting activity keep trying
- Improves confidence
- Regulating and sustained effort (Task persistence)
What are the 3 types of goals
- Outcome goals
- Performance goals
- Process goals
Outcome goals
A goal ste against the performance of others based on a result
Benefits of outcome goals
- focus on gaining a prize
- Success based
- If it is realistic motivation is maintained
- Performers are outcome orientated
Limitations of outcome goals
- If not achieved then motivation can be lost
- Not good for beginners/cognitive learners
Performance goals
When the athlete sets a goal to better their own performance rather than comparing to others
Benefits of performance goals
- Reduce anxiety in competition
- Provide consistent motivation
- Judged giants previous ability (own performance)
- Specific to individual
Process goals
Based on improving technique
Benefit of process goals
- Used as a base so that betterperformacne can be achieved
Limitation of process goals
If the goal is only concerned with the end result then motivation may be lost if too difficult

Re-do
Specific
Goals should be clear and precise. These goals should be specific to the performer and sport
Measured
Goals should be able to be assessed- to aid motivation. Measurements allow for performers to track progress towards goal
Achievement
The performer should be able to reach their goal. By reaching goal, it increases motivation and self satisfaction
Realistic
The goals should be within reach to promote motivation and sustain effort, yet not too difficult so that they’re impossible to reach
Time-bound
Short term and long term steps should be clearly defined so that there is a clear deadline for coach/player to assess if the goal has been reached
Evaluate
Performer/coach should assess success and failures of the goal. So it can be adapted for the future
Re-do
If the goal hasn’t been reached, if progress is slow or after evaluation the performer thinks that something could’ve been done better, do it again. Re-visit failures.
