Due to:
> Overuse
Normal use but low bone density
- osteoporosis
- REDS (relative energy deficient syndrome) usually in female athletes in teens - 20’s where they don’t eat enough for their exercise level
- signs of REDS: Low body fat
: disrupted menstrual cycle
: previous fracture
: high exercise levels
Symptoms of stress fracture
> Gradual onset
Exertional groin pain (neck of femur stress fracture)
Aggravated by exercise and extreme hip RoM
Diagnosis
> Radiograph doesn’t often show
MRI is gold standard
*Early diagnosis is key to preventing avascular necrosis because of disruption of blood supply to head of femur
