A

> Normal development of outgrowth of bone that will fuse later in life
- found where major tendons/ligaments attach e.g tibial tubercle

Stages of maturation

A

> 0 -11 yrs - cartilaginous
11 - 14 - Apophyseal
14 - 18 - Epiphyseal (coalescence of epiphysis + apophysis)
>18 - Bony

Injury

A

> Bony growth is less than ability of muscle-tendon unit to stretch
- flexibility decreases
- apophysis (not fully ossified) = weakest point
Repetitive or excessive traction causes repeated micro-trauma and irritation
Results in pain + thickening @ apophysis
*most common in sporty 12-16yr olds
