Apophysitis Flashcards
Definition
> Normal development of outgrowth of bone that will fuse later in life
- found where major tendons/ligaments attach e.g tibial tubercle
Stages of maturation
> 0 -11 yrs - cartilaginous
11 - 14 - Apophyseal
14 - 18 - Epiphyseal (coalescence of epiphysis + apophysis)
>18 - Bony
Injury
> Bony growth is less than ability of muscle-tendon unit to stretch
- flexibility decreases
- apophysis (not fully ossified) = weakest point
Repetitive or excessive traction causes repeated micro-trauma and irritation
Results in pain + thickening @ apophysis
*most common in sporty 12-16yr olds
Examples
> Osgood Schlatter Diasease
- tibial tubercle (footballers/basketballers)
Sinding-Larsen-Johansson syndrome
- apex of patella
Sever’s disease
- calcaneal insertion of achilles (runners/jumpers)
