What is the general adaptation syndrome?
model produced by Dr Hans Salye which shows the 3 stages of alleged effects that stress has on the body
What is the Alarm Phase of the GAS
The body enters the fight or flight phase activating the sympathetic nervous system which produces adrenaline so the body can respond to the threat created by the stress
What is the resistance phase of GAS
Body adapts to the flight or fight response and homeostasis begins to restore balance . Problems will start to occur if this stage is repeated with little recovery time
What is the Exhaustion phase of GAS
The body’s resistance to stress collapses entirely. If the resistance process is repeated with little recovery time there may be mental or physical effects
What are the physical results of too much stress?
Agitation Unhappiness/sadness Moody Anxious Overwhelmed Inability to relax Digestive Issues Aches and pains Muscle tension Headaches Low Immune system
What are the emotional signs of stress overload
Less than normal patience Feeling sad or depressed Feelings of being overwhelmed Restlessness Irritability Sense of isolation Low self esteem
What are the behavioral signs o f stress overload
Changes in sleeping habits Change in eating habits New or increased use of drugs or alcohol Nail biting Pacing Social isolation
What are the physical signs of stress overload
Irregular bowel movements Sweaty palms and face Irregular menstrual cycle Getting sick more than usual Increase heart rate and blood pressure Heartburn and indigestion
