Clinical Reasoning Flashcards
state what is clinical reasoning
thinking process involved in making well judged decisions in health care
Explain what clinical reasoning is
its how we collect cues and process information to understand a patients problem to to plan and evaluate a plan
what does disposition mean
disposition is the persons qualities, attitude and perspectives that influces their thinking which determines the process of clinical thinking
what contributes to a clinical reasoning disposition
confidence flexibility intuition creativity inquisitivenss reflective open mindedness
compare a critical and a non critical thinker
critical thinkers are curious about the reasons behind ideas and actions and make decisions based on facts and can think independently
a non critcial thinker is task orientated and is unconcerned by the facts and reasons behind actions. They make decisions based on feelings and tend to rely on others to think of solutions,
what is thinking and clinical thinking
thinking is a skill that requires gaining specific knowledge, skill and experience
clinical thinking is the ability to reflect on information analytically to solve problems and make good judgement
what are the elements behind the process of clinical reasoning
use of knowledge
cognition = involves analysing and evaluating clinical data and apply theory to practice
metacognition = monitoring cognition by reflecting on validity of clinical reasoning
why is clinical thinking important
it enables us to apply a holistic approach to care by linking theory to practice and using experience and knowledge to make clinical judgements
What are the 8 stages of clinical reasoning
observe collect process decide plan act evaluate reflect
What are the types clinical reasoning
procedural reasoning
interactive reasoning
conditional reasoning
what is procedural reasoning
identifying a problem and trying to fix it using pattern recognition
What is interactive reasoning
more concerned on interacting with patients and understanding their experience to allow the evaluation of the sucess of the intervention from the patients perspective
What is conditional reasoning
consider all factors to allow the patient and clinician to understand how their choices can affect their future
What are the types of clinicians
novice = has no experience and depend on theory. Use rule bases procedural reasoning
Advanced/ beginner = coperates contextual information into rule bases thinking
Competent = use conditional reasoning
Proficient= evaluations are more targeted and reasoning is ethical and attentive to the patients needs
Expert= clinical reasoning is based on clinical experience
What are the ethics in clinical reasoning
focused on doing what is right for the patient and focuses on
having consent
maintaining confidentiality
doing good
doing no harm to patient
