Communication can influence all our relationships.
A lack of effective communication can lead to disputes.
Effective communication is an essential part of having successful personal and work based relationships.
What are the 4 communication styles
Passive, agressive, passive-agressive and asserive
What is passive communication?
The passive style of communicating is all about keeping our head down and avoiding conflict
What is aggressive communication
Aggressive communication is when we use our words to force others to do what we want
What is passive aggressive communication
It is a combination of passive and aggressive it’s used to express our frustration while avoiding consequences
What is assertive communication
Assertive communication is clearly and honestly saying what we want whilst respecting other people in the way that we communicate.
What is assertivenes
Assertiveness is a word used to describe a positive way of behaving and communicating with others.Assertiveness includes being able to set boundaries, say ‘no’ to others in an appropriate way and accept the consequences of this
What are assertive behaviours
Having an upright, relaxed but not stiff posture Behaving in a self-assured manner Maintaining direct eye contact Being open and affable Remaining calm even under provocation Using a firm clear voice Showing honest emotions Being respectful in their communication
What are the advantages of assertive behaviours
It allows us to express our thoughts and feelings
It encourages mutual respect
It can increase our feeling of self-confidence and self-belief
It helps us to get the things that we want without hurting others
It helps us to learn to compromise
It prevents us from feeling as if we are being taken advantage of
What could prevent someone from being assertive
A fear of being rejected
Fear of being criticised
Considered unfeminine/not masculine enough
Considered emotional
Being seen as pushy
Considered uptight/under pressure (stressed out)
Misunderstood
Taken advantage of.
Insecure about their abilities as practitioners
