Stomach Syndromes - Pathology Flashcards
St Qi Xu (empty condition)
Symps
Uncomfortable feeling in epigastrium, poor or abnormal appitite, tiredness, esp in morning. Weak limbs, lack of taste, loose stools, overthinking and inappropriate sympathy.
Most arise from Qi xu.
St is root of post heavenly qi, and beginning stage of production of qi from food. So if St is xu then all other organs will suffer.
Therefore tiredness is a key symptom.
Uncomfortable feeling in epigastrium is due to weak St Qi failing to descend.
Weak limbs - weak st qi failing to transport qi (food essences) to limbs
Loose stools, no appitite lack of taste due to sp qi xu.
St Yin Xu (empty condition)
Symps
Abnormal appitite, dull or slight burning in epigastrium,
constipation with dry stools.
Feeling of heat in the PM,
dry mouth and throat, esp. in PM, thirst with desire to drink in small sips,
slight feeling of fullness after eating,
overthinking and inappropriate sympathy.
St is origin of fluids and when there is yin xu there will be dryness.
Feeling of heat due ti general Yin xu
Appetite poor if rotting and ripening function is impaired. However if yin xu has led to empty heat, appitite may increase and rotting and ripening function may increase.
St Fire (and Phlegm Fire (Full condition)
Symps
This is full yang out of control and upward yang, screaming out, hot and thirsty.
Burning pain in epigastrium
Intense thirst with desire to drink cold liquids
Constant hunger
Mental restlessness
swollen painful and bleeding gums,
mouth ulcers
Sour regurgitation
dry stools and constipation
nausea, vomiting after eating
bad breath,
Feeling of heat
Full heat dries up the fluids causing intense thirst and constipation.
Heat causes blood to extravasate in St channel causing bleeding gums, pain in gums, and swelling.
Heat obstructs descending function of St qi, causing epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting and sour regurgitation. When phlegm fire, phlegm leads to obstruction leading to feeling of oppression and affects the shen.
Cold invading the Stomach (full)
Symps
Sudden severe pain in the epigastrium
Vomiting clear fluid
Feeling cold
Cold limbs
preference for warm liquids
Feel worse after drinking cold drinks, which are swiftly vomited.
All symps due to exterior cold invading st and stopping the downward function of ST Qi leading to nausea and vomiting, and pain.
Also impairs St and Sp Yang preventing food essences for reaching the rest of the body. leading to feelings of cold and desire for warmth and warm liquids.
Retention of food in St
Symps
Basically caused by overeating…
Fullness, pain and distension of the epigastrium relieved by vomiting.
Sour regurgitation,
no appetite
foul breath,
belching,
insomnia,
loose stools or constipation,
poor appetite.
Full condition which can be associated with either cold or heat.
Obstruction of food prevents downward motion of Qi causing vomiting, nausea, fullness pain and distention.
Prolonged obstruction leads to obstruction in middle jiao stopping heart qi from descending which may lead to shen disturbance, resulting in insomnia.
stagnation of Bl in St (full condition)
Symps
Severe stabbing pain in the stomach (they can often directly point to the pain) which may be worse at night and with pressure.
Vomiting possibly with dark blood.
Pain after eating.
Dark blood in stools
Most symps from stag of blood in st. Pain is usually severe and stabbing. Stag always results in dark blood hence vomiting dark blood. Blood in stools due to stasis extending to LI.
