- *large bore IV needed
When can shock occur due to blood loss (how much blood)
1L/24hours
What treatments can be done for Upper GI bleeding?
- Lavage
- EGD
- Acid suppression
What is used to do lavage?
room temp tap water!! (does NOT have to be sterile b/c the gut isn’t sterile)
What does the nurse need to record with lavage?
how much fluid goes in versus how much comes out
Pt position for lavage?
LEFT side
How much water is instilled during lavage
-instill tap water until it comes out CLEAR (will be bloody for a while)
**200-300mL normally
What needs to be counted during lavage
number/size of blood clots
T or F: EGD can be done bedside
T
pre-procedure teaching for EGD?

**consent must be signed!!
What occurs during EGD to stop GI bleeding?
- inject chemicals into bleeding site
