Why does dumping syndrome occur?
Occurs due to rapid emptying of food contents into the small intestine, which shifts fluid into the gut
What does dumping syndrome cause in the gut?
Abdominal distention
What are the EARLY manifestations of Dumping Syndrome?
(occur within 30 min)
- vertigo
- tachycardia
- syncope
- sweating
- pallor
- palpitations
- desire to lie down
If a pt with dumping syndrome desires to lie down, what should you instruct them to do?
Lie down!!
When do late manifestations of Dumping Syndrome occur?
90 min to 3 hours
Why do LATE symptoms occur?
Excess release of insulin
What are the late manifestations of Dumping Syndrome?
- RAPID rise in glucose
- dizziness
- light-headedness
- palpitations
- sweating
- confusion
How can Dumping Syndrome be managed
- lay in supine position after meals
- decrease amount of food taken in at once
- eliminate liquids with food
- HIGH protein and fat
- LOW carb
What 3 complications can occur with NGT use?
- Overfeeding
- Diarrhea
- Aspiration
How does overfeeding occur with NGT?
Result?
Results from infusion of greater quantity of feeding than can be readily digested by the client
**resulting in abdominal distention, nausea and vomiting
Nursing actions to avoid overfeeding?
Residuals
- Check Q4-6 hours
- may need to withhold excess per policy
- withhold feeding per policy
What is diarrhea with NG secondary to?
concentration of feeding or its constituents
How can diarrhea be avoided?
- SLOWer infusion rate
- collab with dietician
What nursing actions are needed with diarrhea?
- assess for dehydration
- provide skin care and protection
What can occur if the pt aspirates bia the NGT?
Pneumonia
