Incomplete bladder emptying
-sitting bacteria!
What is the issue with urinary stones?
- large stones can obstruct urine flow
- roughness of stones can irritate bladder mucosa
- bacteria can live within stones
What occurs with the Vesicouretal reflex?
Bacteria-laden urine is forced backward from bladder into ureters and kidneys
How can DM cause a UTI?
- Excess glucose in urine is a medium for bacteria
- peripheral neuropathy can cause the bladder to become flaccid
What with WOMEN puts them at higher risk of UTI?
- use of douches, tampons, diaphragms
- bladder displacement during preg
- too large of a diaphragm
- vaginal prolapse
- low estrogen post menopausal
What with MEN puts them at a higher risk of UTI?
- prostate enlargement
- age: prostatic secretions lose
- antibacterial quality
- STDs
What occurs with increased age that increases risk for UTI?
- urinary stasis
- neuromuscular conditions (parkinson’s/stroke)
- anticholinergic drugs
- fecal incontinence (contamination)
What is the strongest risk factor for uncomplicated cystitis?
Sexual activity
*especially in young women
Why can sexual activity increase risk of UTI?
- irritation can promote bacterial growth
- inadequate lubrication
- bacterial introduced during anal intercourse
What meds can increase risk of UTI?
Antibiotics!!
