When does this occur?
In pts. who are malnourished after nutrition is initiated (from a starvation state)
What happens during this?
Electrolytes escape from cells into serum
What is main symptom?
Hypphosphatemia
Patient is starved from nutrition, body breaks down what instead of what for energy ?
Body breaks down fat and protein instead of carbs for energy
Insulin secreation decreases with starvation process but with refeeding, is it resumed?
Yes
Occurs with what kind of nutrition?
Parenteral
Hallmark symptom?
Hyphophosphatemia
Abnormal?
Sodium and fluid balance
Changes in what?
Glucose, protein, and fat metabolism
What deficiency?
Thiamine
Hypo or hyperkalemia?
HYPOkalemia
Hypo or hypermagnesemia?
HYPOmagnesaemia
Prevention?
Do nutritional assessment within first 24 hours of admission –quickly assess and therapy can prevent refeeding syndrome
