Stolypin's Land Reform Flashcards
What was Stolypin’s Plan?
His plan was let individual peasants leave communes to set up family farms. Each family gets profits from crops and didn’t need to share. He hoped that farmers would use modern techniques for more crop yield.
Why was it known as the Wager of the Strong?
Wagered that if peasants were successful, they would stop burning manors and supported the government. Encouraged peasant migration from Siberia. 3.5 million Russians moved to Siberia during 1905-1917.
How successful was the Land Reform?
The land reform was complex. There were far more applications. In theory, peasants ran their own field but families worked together. By 1915, only 15% of peasants combined their land together into family farms. The physical aim was successful, however the political aim was not. It also did not increase support for the Tsar as the 1917 Revolutions took place.
