Mistakes of Provisional Government Flashcards
What were the Mistakes of the Provisional Government?
Continuing WW1, Delaying Elections, Delaying Reforms, Allowing more Freedoms, The June Offensive
Why was continuing WW1 a mistake?
Russia relied on investments made by allied countries. The P.G believed that if they pulled out of the war, the allies may turn away from Russia. Unfortunately, ordinary citizens wanted Russia to be out of the war.
Why did the Provisional Government delay elections?
Organizing elections were difficult and they had always intended to have elections for a constituent assembly. This made it seem like the P.G was trying to stay in power without being elected.
Allowing more Freedom
They introduced greater freedom of speech, it made it legal to hold meetings and political parties and reduced the autocracy of the Tsar’s rule. This also allowed open criticism of the Provisional government.
The June Offensive
In May 1917, Kerensky was appointed minister of war. He believed that a large offensive would boost morale and increase confidence. The June offensive was disastrous and the Russian front collapsed. Showed that the military cannot function well.
