Positive Effect
Gave Tsarism a big boost, people felt very patriotic. The Tsar’s popularity increased especially during the rapid mobilization of the Russian Army.
Negative Effects
, Russians lost the battle of Tannenberg in August 1914. Russians lost more than 100,000 men and 30,000 men were killed. By the end of 1915, Russia lost 2 million men and was in retreat.
Growing Discontent
People were sad at the loss of Russian men and German occupation. Tsarist government was blamed for the lack of supplies and weapons. 1/3 of the army did not have rifles. There was a shortage of winter clothes, ammunition and food.
Nicholas’ decision to take command
In August 1915, Nicholas decided to take charge of the army and navy. This meant that Nicholas would take all responsibility and blame. Nicholas believed that it was his sacred duty to take responsibility.
Economic Effects of WW1
Enormous costs of WW1. 17 Billion roubles between 1914-1917. The nation’s most important economic areas such as Poland were occupied by Germany. Trade was also limited towards other European countries as ports were occupied. by Germans. Inflation happened as the government printed more bills to pay off debt. Prices went up and wages went down. Middle class savings decreased per day and working class struggled to buy food. Taxes also increased to pay off debts
Social Effects of WW1
Requisitioning allowed army to take what it needed from peasants, which increased famine and starvation. Railway gave priority to transporting military supplies, food cargos were often left to rot. Unemployment was a problem as factories did not have material that they can use to produce. Many factories closed down.
Political Effects of WW1
Duma was suspended in April 1914 to help the government focus on winning the war. Duma wanted to replace the Tsar as the war got worse, the Tsar refused. 1/2 of Duma deputies formed a bloc. Duma became critical on Tsarist government and Rasputin’s intervention.
