Many were liberals and wanted to see change. They wanted a constitution that granted them rights and civil liberties.
Reasons for Discontent in Russia (Radicals)
Tsarism was under threat from revolutionaries. Many revolutionaries were from the SR and followed socialism. They wanted to destroy the Tsarist government. RSDP was created in 1898, it was a tiny party comprising of Mensheviks and Bolsheviks led by Lenin. (believed in takeover when time is right)
Reasons for Discontent in Russia (Police State)
The police were given a lot of power. Courts and police served the Tsar instead of the people. Censorship was harsh to prevent the spread of socialist ideas. People who were suspected of working against government were exiled to Siberia.

Peasants were overtaxed and population growth meant that more land is needed to sustain themselves. However, peasants were poor and cannot afford land. They were also disappointed with how the government handles famines.
