Events of the 1905 Revolution Flashcards
Potemkin Mutiny (June 1905)
The sailors complained about their meat having maggots. Ship’s doctor claimed that the meat was acceptable. Officers threatened to shoot soldiers who refused to eat the meat. A soldier was shot and the sailors rebelled. They killed an officer and took control of the ship. Mutineers sailed to Odessa, where strikes and protests took place for several weeks. There was overwhelming amount of support towards the sailors.
Underlying context of the Potemkin Mutiny

This paralyzed Russia’s important industries including the railway. Without railways, Russia would not function. The general strike linked the workers with the middle classes, who wanted reform. The general strike then became a national strike against the government.
Saint Petersburg Soviet
A council of workers set up in October 1905 that helped to organize the general strike. Other soviets were set up in other cities. Lasted only from September to Early December. This idea of a worker’s soviet became important in 1917.
