Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 & 2

is it mainly symptomatic or asymptomatic?
A
80% have no symptoms

what are the symptoms?
A
2 skin ones: -burning/ itching then blistering then tender ulceration -inguinal lymphadenopathy systemic: -flu-like symptoms -neuralgic pain in back, pelvis and legs uro: -dysuria

what are complications that may arise as a cause of it?
A
- autonomic neuropathy
- neonatal infection
- secondary infection

what is its’ incubation period?
A
5 days to months

what is the epidemiology?
A
- very common
- both strains equally common in genital infection
- roughly equal between sexes

what is HSV2 an important co-factor for?
A
HIV transmission

how do you diagnose it?
A
swab from lesion tested using PCR

what is the treatment for a primary outbreak of it?
A
Aciclovir for 5 days + Lidocaine ointment

what is the treatment for infrequent occurrences of it?
A
Lidocaine ointment + Aciclovir once daily until symptoms gone

what is the treatment for frequent recurrences?
A
Aciclovir long-term as suppression
