Physiology of Placenta Formation Flashcards
1
Q
what does progesterone cause?
A
- thickens the lining of endometrium
- endometrium –> decidua
- increase in vascularity
2
Q
what is the chorion?
A
the egg
3
Q
what lines the outer edge of the chorion?
A
trophoblast cells
4
Q
what do trophoblast cells produce?
A
B-HCG
5
Q
what is the function of B-HCG?
A
- stimulates ovary to continue secreting progesterone throughout pregnancy
- stops decidua from shedding
6
Q
outline what happens once the fertilised egg burrows into the decidua
A
- trophoblast cells go off to invade mother’s blood vessels to link these up with foetus
- projections of chorionic villi lined with trophoblasts start to move in towards the decidua
- eventually join together and form placenta
