- benign
- 0.01% are malignant
- common

higher incidence in afro-caribbean women

diagnosis?
A
- clinical examination
- hysteroscopy / USS

what is a hysteroscopy?
A
procedure used to inspect the inside of the uterus

types of fibroids
A
- submucous
- protruding into uterine cavity
- intramural
- within the uterine wall
- subserosal
- protruding into peritoneal cavity

symptoms?
A
- if large–> pressure symptoms
- heavy periods
- IMB
- can grow rapidly in pregnancy causing pain and obstruction of labour

treatment?
A
treat only if symptomatic
- GnRH analogues shrink it temporarily
- submucous
- transcervical resection
- myomectomy
- uterine artery embolisation
- hysterectomy
