  • 90%
  • Thick, profuse, yellow discharge
  • dysuria
  • rectal and pharyngeal infection (however this is often asymptomatic)

what is the epidemiology?

A
  • less common than chlamydia
  • most cases are in men
  • more common in men who have sex with men (MSM)

how do you diagnose it?

A
  • Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) on urine swab from an exposed site
  • In symptomatic people –> Gram stained smear from urethra/ cervix / rectum

A

culture of swab-obtained specimen from an exposed site to assess antibiotic sensitivity
