Azithromycin
A
Macrolide (-thromycin), broad spectrum antimicrobial drug with a bacteriostatic (prevents growth) mechanism.
(chlamydia is a gram-negative, non-motile coccoid bacterium).
MOA
Binds to 23S rRNA of bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit (ribosomes needed for translation)
Inhibits transpeptidation/translocation step of protein synthesis
Inhibits assembly of 50S ribosomal subunit - bacterial protein synthesis stopped
Side effects
Hepatotoxicity (rare)
Nausea
Diarrhea
Headache
Vomiting
Change of taste and smell
Dizziness or fatigue
