Benzylpenicillin
A
Mechanism:
○Binds PBP, inhibits peptidoglycan cross-linking to form cell walls so increase in permeability leading to lysis
○Treatment of gram-positive cocci infections, esp. streptococcal.
○Typically used IV or in long-acting injectable formulations due to poor oral absorption- Meningitis in suspected adults -1.2 grams. Meningitis confirmed in adults-2.4 grams every 4 hours
Side effects:
Diarrhoea; hypersensitivity; nausea; skin reactions; thrombocytopenia; vomiting
