• Vitamin deficiencies are common as chronic alcohol consumption usually means individuals get all their calories from alcohol leading to severe vitamin deficiencies as there is no nutritional value to alcohol- leads to liver failure and neurotoxicity
• IV vitamins for alcohol misuse - IV thiamine labrinex which is a mix of vitamins B & C (water-soluble B1, B2, B3 and B6 and 0)
• Used for prevention of Wernickes encephalopathy which is seen most often in setting or poor nutrition or prolonged vomiting in patients with chronic alcohol abuse - this is reversible if identified quickly and treated. Untreated WE may lead to Korsakoff syndrome which is largely irreversible
